Research Facilities * The department has Five computer. * There are over 50 books in our departmental library. * There is reading room for our scholars. Small Group Laboratory Group Discussions * The small group laboratory is a unique feature of this department and is located on the third floor (Room No. 303). * Group discussions constitute part of the core curriculum of the department They are compulsory. * This is offered to students of M.A.PartII and TYBA. * The group discussions comprise of eight sessions. Fourth and eighth sessions are didactic sessions. * Students are evaluated for these eight sessions out of 30 marks. * Their assessment is based on their participation in group discussions and the report writting. * Students' views about small group laboratory sessions: # Provides an opportunity for self analysis. # Train members to work as a team. # Helps to develop leadership qualities. # Train students to express their views freely. # Helps to overcome shyness and develop confidence. # Creates the feeling of belongingness to a group. # Facilitates understanding, adjustment and compromise. # It significantly contributes to the development of personality and future career. The Sociology StudentsAssociation * The Sociology Students' Association was founded in 1973. It is a formal body with a constitution. Teachers and students become members by paying a specified fee. * The Association has been very active in promoting extra curricular activities, including cultural and intellectual activities in the Department. * Inaugural Function, Picnic and Annual Function, are the integral cultural programmes organized by the Association. It provides a platform to the students to bring out their talents and facililitates interaction with other students. * "Shodh", founded two years ago, is the intellectual wing of the Association. The intellectual activities comprises of talks and lectures by distinguished scholars. * The students are taught to be accountable and transparent. They are taught to maintain proper accounts which are displayed on the notice-board from time to time. * The Head of the Department is the President of the Association who in turn appoints Teacher Office Bearers for each academic year. * Besides the President and the Teacher Office Bearers, the Executive Committee comprises of the Nominated, Elected and Co-opted members from each class. Sociology Bulletin Board * The students of SYBA (Major), TYBA, MA I & MA II display their collage on this bulletin board. * The collage is prepared by the students on various issues of sociological significance under the guidance of a Teacher-incharge. * Each collage id displayed for about a month. * The classes compete among themselves for the award of the best collage. * Each collage is judged by a team of teachers on the basis of: (1) Content (2) Contemporary relevance (3) Presentation (4) Choice of theme or issue (5) The involvement of the students of a class * The best collage is rewarded by the Sociology Students' Association in the Annual Function. Gift Book Collection Library * It was started by the outgoing students of the Department in mid sixties. It is a unique feature of the Department. * It contains 580 books of sociological relevance. The books are mainly gifted by the past students as well as teachers of the department. * It is managed by the students under the supervision of a Teacher-incharge appointed by the Head of the Department. It works during a specified time on all working days. Only the members of the library are allowed to use it. The members are required to pay a specified fee and observe the rules regarding the issue of books. * Over the years, the students and teachers have benefited from this library and it has become an inherent part of the Department. Scholarships * The department has instituted the prestigious Professor M.N. Srinivas Scholarship for students doing M.A. This has been in existence since1993-94. * The department has also instituted the prestigious Scholarships in the name of Prof. I P Desai for Under-graduates students .
