The Centre for Canadian Studies was established as an inter-disciplinary centre by the UGC in 1991. In the initial stages Departments of English, Economics, History and Political Science were associated with the Centre either in teaching (Centre is a facilitator in teaching programme) or research in Canadian studies and India- Canada relations. Over the years the Centre’s academic activites grew with the financial support of Government of India and Canada through their various programmes, Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute and Canadian High Commission. The Centre’s scope has expanded to various other disciplines like, Commerce, Journalism & Communication, Law, Management, Women’s Studies etc. As per the guidelines of UGC and mandate of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, the scope of the functioning of the Centre is now extended to Science and Technology. M.S.University of Baroda, is a member of Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, a bilateral organization of Government of India and Canada.

The Centre was elevated by the UGC to the status of Area Studies Programme (ASP) in Canadian Studies in 2002. It is one of the four Area studies centres in the country. The UGC, after reviewing its performance, has renewed the ASP for the period 2014-19 and for which a grant of Rs. 16.25 lakhs is sanctioned. The thrust areas of the ASP are India-Canada economic relations, Immigration and diversity studies, Gender studies and Environment.
