Instituted in 1964, the Department of Linguistics offers general and specialized courses at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. It is one of the few departments in the country to offer undergraduate courses in Linguistics and the only department in Gujarat state, to teach Linguistics in English.
The Department of Linguistics offers courses in core branches of linguistics such as Morphology, Phonology, Syntax, Semantics and in various interdisciplinary areas such as Pragmatics, Semiotics, Psycholinguistics, Computational linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Applied linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Historical Linguistics and others. The study of Linguistics would be beneficial to students from various disciplines such as Language and Literature Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy and Education.
As a small yet dynamic department, the Department of Linguistics has made noteworthy academic contribution to the discipline during its fifty years, by periodically organising Seminars, Workshops and Conferences in collaboration with various reputed institutes, as well as organising regular academic activities like colloquia, talks by eminent scholars, lectures and short-term courses on various specialised areas of linguistics by nationally and internationally renowned linguists and research scholars. The departmental library has a good collection of books as well as National and International journals donated by teachers of the Department and visiting faculties from outside.
