The Department of Geography was established in the year 1952. It runs two parallel undergraduate courses in Science and Arts and post graduate course in Science. These include History of Geographical thought and Research Methodology, Geomorphology, Industrial, Agriculture, Population, Social, Political, Regional Planning and Development, Fluvial Geomorphology, Geography of Health, Geography of Oceans and Urban. The courses offered are revised at regular intervals to meet contemporary needs. The department has an excellent faculty profile with a rich spread of specializations. There is a healthy teacher-student ratio so that students receive personal attention which facilitates their learning and growth. Study tours are regularly conducted to enrich the knowledge of students and develop their geographical skills.

The department has a good tradition of research. In the last five years twelve research projects have been undertaken and successfully completed and Two Projects funded by UGC and ICSSR. are under progress. The thrust areas include geography of health, applied geomorphology and land use, environmental studies, social geography particularly study of tribal areas.

The department has an excellent library and computer facilities, a cartography lab and Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System Lab in which the department imparts training to its students.

The department is active in conducting conferences, seminars and workshops. It is also actively engaged in popularizing the subject among the school students and the general public regarding the significance of geography by organizing exhibitions, open house, debates and quiz contests.

The future plans of the department include firstly, enrolling for the Special Assistance Programmes in order to strengthen research and improve the infrastructure of the department; secondly, carrying out consultancy using the modern tools of GIS and Remote Sensing; thirdly, undertaking applied research to increase the applicability of geography in various environmental issues.
