Kalabhavan established in the year 1890 by the visionary Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad –III,is celebrating its 125 th anniversary of its establishment.He envisaged that Vadodara will be an industrially developed city after 100 years.True to his vision Vadodara has grown into  a hub with  an all round variety of industries including  strategically placed  important ,product and process industries with various grades of automation.This automation which is increasing in leaps and bounds almost everyday It has   also created the need of development of  skill, appropriate to specific  requirement of industry.
Today extensive automation is practiced in practically every type of manufacturing and assembly process. Some of the larger processes include electrical power generation, oil refining, chemicals, steel mills, plastics, cement plants, fertilizer plants, pulp and paper mills, automobile and truck assembly, aircraft production, glass manufacturing, natural gas separation plants, food and beverage processing, canning and bottling and manufacture of various kinds of parts. Robots are especially useful in hazardous application like automobile spray painting. Robots are also used to assemble electronic circuit boards. Automotive welding is done with robots and automatic welders are used in applications like pipelines
 
With this perception Government of Gujarat under its Public Private Policy(PPP) mode has entered into MOU to establish Five Centre Of excellence in important fields of Automobile,Industrial Automation,Industrial Machinery,Aerospace Engineering& Marine Engineering and Ship Building  at various places in Gandhinagar,Ahmedabad ,Surat & Baroda.
Under this CoE with total project cost of Rs. 102.00 Crores including cost of 36 globally acceptable software and its training. SIEMENS CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE ON INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION at Mechanical Engineering Department ,Faculty of Technology & Engineering, The Maharaja Sayajirao University Of Baroda has been established in a renovated infrastructure in the premises of historic premises of KALABHAVAN WORKSHOP, for which GoG has provided Rs. 2.90 crores to create infrastructure to house  the  laboratories such as -
  1. Automation laboratory
  2. Mechatronics laboratory
  3. Process Instrumentation laboratory
  4. Electrical Laboratory
  5. Rapid prototyping laboratory
  6. Computer Integrated Manufacturing(CIM)Simulation Laboratory
  7. Advanced Manufacturing laboratory
  8. CNC Programming laboratory
  9. Design Validation laboratory
 
With total of almost over 9000 sq. ft. of space housing globally acceptable training modules.Students of MSU and other institutions will be enrolled to undertake various modules of programme  and will be evaluated by SIEMENS/ DESIGN TECH. and on successful completion will be provided with certification which will enable to make them acceptable globally for employment, in those modules.As such almost over 80 modules are possible depending upon the need and level of training needed in the field of  automation.
 
So far two programme of training the trainers have been conducted. After this inauguration students training programme will be initiated from 19th August  onwards before 10:30 a.m. and after 5:30 p.m. so as to ensure regular classes are not affected. On completion of each module a test will be conducted and on successful clearing of the test certification will be provided by SIEMENS/ DESIGN TECH.
Over 1300 students from MSU and  other Engineering colleges were trained since 19/8/2015.
Also first industrial interaction with SunPharma wherein 23 fresh recruits from various discipline were trained from 1-24 Septmeber at the Centre.

In the years to come it is envisaged that  almost every student  with basic interest in basic interest and sound fundamentals of Mechanical Enginerring Electrical and Electronics Engineering with adequate Computer Savyness can be harnessed into potentially  globally accepted mechatronics engineer who could fit into any application oriented job involving automation.
 
After two years when the CoE is handed over to MSU center besides providing training for certification can use the facility to start its own graduation and post graduation courses on Mechatronics after following requisite approval process under BoS of relevant disciplines as per the MSU’S Rules and regulations
