INTRODUCTION

Water Resources Engineering and Management Institute (WREMI) is the youngest department of the faculty established in 1991 as a result of the USAID and Govt. of India i.e. Gujarat funded Water Resources Management and Training Project which ran from 01/04/1984 to 30/09/1992. WREMI offers undergraduate degree of B.E. (Civil-Irrigation Water Management), post graduate degrees of M.E.(Civil) in Irrigation Water Management and M.E.(Civil) in Water Resources Engineering and offers Ph.D. in Civil Engineering and Ph.D. in Irrigation Water Management. At present four research scholars are registered for Ph.D. Six research scholars have already obtained Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. The institute is recognised as a major contributor to the water resources engineering & management and watershed development & management at the national level. The institute is recognised as Institutional monitor/evaluator by CAPART. The institute is also recognised as leading consulting institute by Narmada, Water Resources, Water Supply & Kalpasar Department, Government of Gujarat and Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited.

BACKGROUND

In 1980s in Gujarat State a massive step to boost up the agricultural production was taken up by modernising existing irrigation projects and constructing a few new ones including Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project. A need arose for water management process and water management technology that ensures optimal use of water for maximizing crop production.

Looking forward to the need of the state, the Govt. of Gujarat motivated the idea and shown utmost willingness in 1982 to extend all possible help for establishing Water Technology and Management Centre to run a graduate course at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Thus in 1982, when Govt. of India entered into a bilateral agreement with the United States of America, Water Resources Management and Training Project of USAID became a reality. The institute was established under this project. From 1st April 1983 to 30th September 1992, Govt. of Gujarat invested Rs.2,36,55,000/- and the USAID provided US$ 6,75,000/-, for establishing the Centre from 1984 to 1988. From 1988 to 1991 it was called as Irrigation Management and Training Institute. Upto that time Institute was a part of Civil Engineering Department of Faculty of Technology and Engineering.

This Institute is now christened as Water Resources Engineering and Management Institute (WREMI) headed by The Director vide M. S. University, Senate Resolution No. 8 and 10 dtd. 24/3/1991.

About WREMI

The Institute is a full fledged academic department under Faculty of Technology and Engineering of The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda having a campus of 5 hactares near village Samiala, Taluka-Vadodara in Vadodara District. The Institute is 12 km away from Vadodara Railway Station on Vadodara-Padra Highway. It has six class rooms, requisite laboratories, computer rooms, conference room, seminar hall, library facilities, cafeteria, reprographic unit, administrative wings, display room, etc. Out of 5 ha of land about 3 ha is utilized for carrying out on field research work.

Goals

Water Resources Engineering and Management Institute will be one of the best institutes in the field of Water Resources Engineering and Management in India at the end of 2025.

Objectives

To make the Department a centre of excellence by providing latest technical know how to the students, engineers and researchers.

To consolidate various research activities.

To consolidate and develop the department as the foremost Institute in the field of Watershed Development and Management.

To impart short term training to personnel from various government, quasi government, N.G.O.s, actively involved in Water Resources Development and Management.

CURRICULA

Under Graduate Programme : The Institute offers U.G. course leading to a degree of B.E. (Civil-IWM). Qualifying percentage for admission to this course is 55% at H.S.C. The intake is 30. The course covers most of the Civil Engineering subjects and the subjects of Irrigation Water Management such as Hydrology, Ground Water Hydraulics, Soil Science and Agronomy, Water Resources Engineering, Irrigation Management, Irrigation Engineering and two electives from Design of Irrigation Distribution Systems, Drainage Engineering for irrigated agriculture, Sociological Aspects of Irrigated Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Computer Aided Design of Irrigated Structures, Advance Geotechnical Engineering, Economic Evaluation of Irrigation Projects, Soil and Water Conservation Engineering, Onfarm Flow Measurement and Structural Design of Irrigation Structures. 

Post Graduate Programme : The institute offers two P.G. course leading to a degree of M.E. (Civil) Irrigation Water Management and M.E. (Civil) Water Resources Engineering. Both the courses have the intake of 18. The courses cover the following subjects :

Ph.D. Programme:

The institute offers Ph.D. Programme in the field of Civil Engineering and in the field of Irrigation Water Management. For Civil or Civil-IWM graduates the Ph.D. in Civil Engineering degree is offered. For others like Agricultural Engineers and Agronomists/Soil Scientists etc, the degree of Ph.D. in Irrigation Water Management is given.
