The Centre for Continuing/Adult Education and Community Services at The M. S. University of Baroda was set up in the year 1972 with the objective of making University resources available to the community. The University would offer its educational resources to adult groups, community agencies and organizations - persons who were not regularly enrolled as full-time students and whose higher educational needs were not met by educational and other social institutions.
A key purpose of adult education is to enable adult learners to maximize their full potential. Through education, adults should be able to realize their dreams of being the best that they can be, in whatever profession of their choice. Regardless of their ages, adult learners should always be engaged in the process of learning. Therefore, their return to the educational setting should be supported.
As one traces the recommendations of the various Commissions and the UGC guidelines issued from time to time for Adult, Continuing Education & Extension, it is evident that one of the goals of the UGC is to transform the university system into an active instrument for social change through the institutionalization of Extension as the Third Dimension and by ensuring that the university system is adult learner friendly and pro-life long learning.
The courses offered by the Centre for Continuing/Adult Education and Community Services at The M. S. University of Baroda provide personal growth and enrichment, catering to the highly educated people to those with minimum qualifications. It also offers courses for cultural and recreational purposes; classes in arts, music, theatre appreciation and dancing.
The Centre provides professionals such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, business executives, teachers, social workers, architects and others to keep pace with the accelerating proliferation of knowledge and techniques and overcome obsolesce in their respective fields. This may include workshops, conferences, in service training and retraining and refresher courses, which trains an individual for continuing her/his education in relation to her/his job and work.
The courses are evaluated and modified from time to time by the concerned Course Director, Course Coordinator and experts in the related field.
The Centre is the only educational institution in the city of Baroda to offer a wide range of inter-disciplinary courses. There are long-term courses in the fields of Social Sciences, Commerce, Science, Management, Social Work, Interiors, Hospitals and Hospitality. Infact, the course on Industrial Health for MBBS Doctors (Occupational Health) has been recognized by the Department of Labor and Employment of the Government of Gujarat; and this course has become mandatory for Doctors who want to associate themselves with various industries and factories.
