The Reserve Bank of India Endowment Unit was setup in the year 1977 at the Faculty of Commerce's Department of Banking and Insurance, The Maharaj Sayajirao University of Baroda. It was established with the goal of conducting advanced research and doctoral programmes in Banking, Finance, and Economics. In the state of Gujarat, this is the first RBI endowment unit established at a university.

The activities of the Reserve Bank of India Endowment Unit are funded through a corpus of Rs.  Four crores granted by RBI to the university. The unit is supervised and reviewed by the Department of Economic Analysis and Policy, Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai.

Under its research fellowship programme, the Reserve Bank of India Endowment Unit has so far produced several Ph.D.s. The unit's scholars have published numerous research papers in prestigious international and national peer-reviewed journals. The unit has also published several books and monographs. and has hosted several national seminars and workshops. Annually, the unit also hosts talks on the union budget by distinguished experts in the area of banking and economics.

Dr. Dinkar Nayak, the unit's Chair Professor, is now in charge of the unit. Dr. Ketan Kothadia and Ms. Rubina Barodawala are working as research supporting staff.
