Department of Applied Mechanics and Structural Engineering:
The department of Applied Mechanics is one of the oldest department of Faculty of Technology and Engineering of the M. S. University of Baroda. The department teaches the subjects of Applied Mechanics and Materials and Structures to under graduate students of all the disciplines of engineering. The department is also engaged in teaching work of all the subjects related to Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Computer Applications to undergraduate students of Civil Engineering, Irrigation & Water Management and Architecture.
The growth of the department is largely due to its Post-graduate degree programmes in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Fracture Mechanics. On the path of its growth, 12 Doctoral and about 300 Post-graduate candidates are produced by the department in addition to publication of 400 Research Papers and 9 Books.
In the department there are 8 Professors, 12 Readers and 11 Lecturers who are actively engaged in teaching, development and research programmes. Many awards such as Hari Om Ashram Award, Bhaikaka Inter University Award, Prof. Jani Research Promotion Prize, Sir Arthur Cotton Gold Medal Award etc. have also been received by individual members of the department for writing/presenting the best research paper in the fields of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering.
The department is equipped with laboratories in the areas of Applied Mechanics, Materials Testing, Theory of Structure, Soil Mechanics, Concrete Technology, Prestressed Concrete, Experimental Stress Analysis, Computer Aided Designs, AI Applications, Fracture Mechanics, Ground Improvement, Remote Sensing, Rock Mechanics, Soil-Structure Interaction studies etc. These laboratories have been mainly developed by getting grants from different agencies such as AICTE, CSIR, HRD, MOWR and CBIP in addition to equipment grant received under different plans of UGC.
The department has received a number of industry sponsored research projects and has also been catering the needs of Private Sectors, Government Organisations and Industries situated in and around Baroda by providing them material testing facilities.
